Magellanic Penguin

One of the very exciting goals of the trip is to see some penguins!

Pictured here are Magellanic Penguins. These guys can grow to be 30 inches tall and weigh up to 14 pounds.

Along the southern coast of Chile and Argentina this is the type of penguin that can be found in large numbers. They nest in large densely populated colonies and mating pairs stay loyal to each other year after year often re-occupying the same burrow. Because of the large colonies, disasters like oil spills, low fish stocks, or disease can cause devastating mortality rates. This has lead to the species being considered threatened despite a population of about 1.8 million breeding pairs.

There are number of areas set aside to preserve their habitat where I’ll be able to find them. That’s a pretty long motorcycle ride to see penguins!
